"Art. A thing that pushes boundaries, so I am told. What is form and function? What is machine, and what is alive? I give you...Boy!"

Image

The construct makes a bark that sound like gears being ground, but lolls out a canvas tongue. People look over at the creature, having seen clockwork beings before.

"Boy, do a trick?"

The construct instead jumps up, licking Ore's face with the dry raspy paper.

"Boy, snackies? Will you do tricks for snackies?"

The dog construct releases a wave of force, knocking his master over and rummaging through Ore's pockets for food that neither can eat. It's comic, and ridiculous, yet sublime in the odd cross section of their show. A recording of this interaction is submitted.

Art

The illithid did not care much for much of the pageantry of these events but they had to admit that, sometimes, a piece could move the mind of those who would experience it.

To seek to create such a piece could prove to be a simulating experience on it's own. It was good to remind oneself of one's goals so that the means does not become the end into itself.

L'Orr-hui had pondered what they should do and how. They settled on the feeling of emancipation, the rush of the new possibilities available to a free mind. While this was a good baseline there was also need for a struggle for freedom was seldomly gained without struggle, they knew that all too well.

And thus the Mind Stone was created

A sphere of blackened granite made to absorb most of the ambient light, it was streaked with veins of amethyst that emitted their own. The amethyst's radiance was strong enough to be seen but not enough to fully escape the pull of the surrounding granite,

When touched, the stone would feel like clay: cold and wet it would give you the illusion of pulling you in inch by inch, the Stone swallowing more and more light until nearly all went dark. A process with the perfect tempo to make you realize what is going on and make you panic until you decide to fight back.

The more you struggle and fight the Stone the more the amethysts would glow until you finally broke free in an a Nova of lights.

Then, the illusion would end.

In she came, rocking the house with a solid performance of a style of music the sensates surely hadn't heard before! Plucking the strings like some sort of six-string samurai. She didn't even know what a samurai was! And her Bandore actually had 12 strings. Oh well! She was rocking it anyhow. Everyone could hear the value of the boogie-woogie, and she made a convincing case for it afterwards too with words that rhymed with the pluckings and sounded out in time with the rythmn.

"--And that's how I defeated Asmodeus and stole the secrets of surf rock from him."

She was embellishing a little too much.

And she had no idea they noticed.

by Thaddeus » Wed Aug 16, 2023 5:14 pm

Before meeting with Annali and her fellow critics, Thaddeus delves deep into the histories of the Dao, wishing to present a traditional song, one that had been lost to time. He finds the perfect piece and adapts it to be played on his viol. After presenting himself, Thad brings his audience into his vessel. There, they find themselves enveloped in comfort and luxury.

A faint mist permeates the room. A concoction Thad had brewed earlier in the day. Its design was to bring on minor, visual hallucinations to enhance the experience. What he hadn't counted on was the efficacy of the mixture. Other than dampening the space, there was little other effect. Perhaps he had brewed it too early, or perhaps the Sensates' tolerance was a bit too high.

No matter, it was a minor artifice for enrichment, not the main act. Where hallucinations couldn't be counted on, illusions could. Taking up his viol, tiny particles of sand begin to swirl around the room until nearly all the room was filled with waves of sand pulsing and churning through the air. Then music emerges from amidst the sands. Opening with a single drawn out note, it soon evolves into a slow, alternating beat. The cadence steadily grows and quickens until it comes to a crescendo, the sands pulsing in time. The satyr sees his fellow Sensates bobbing their heads along. Suddenly, the sand falls to the floor and the music halts, leaving Thaddeus standing in the center holding his viol.

After they returned to the Festhall chambers, Annali comes over, "It was a lovely performance; however, while it is not something you were hear in a tavern today, there was a time when it could be heard all over. There are many renditions in the halls already." She gives him a pat on the shoulder and goes on to her next recording. As she is leaving, another of the Sensates can be heard humming the tune... "I guess we'll be hearing this one make the rounds again." she sighs.

Ikkit mostly came for the free food.

And to make a point.

So he set out a shabby little table, put a rusty knife on top of it, and a crudely lettered sign.
"TRY SOMETHING NEW!"
Then he had a seat behind it and clasped his hands, favoring his audience with a big, toothy smile.

As was so often the case, no Sensate really seemed inclined to figure out what sort of experience the goblin with the rusty knife was offering.

Which was sort of the point.

by Cyprian Kircheis » Wed Aug 16, 2023 4:49 am

After watching how hard a time Akh had with her presentation Cyprian shrugged off the challenge and put away his lute. 'When the crowd can't be pleased, have fun despite them.' That's what his Kobold mentor had told him years ago. And he was right. Thrown tomatoes still eat!

So instead he reached into his pack and pulled out a deflated object that needed a little love and care. Then after about five minutes he was ready.

TRUE DEATH METAL!!!!!!

Cyprian infused the motif of fire as a representation of passion. Combining the fire motif and the true death theme he'd kind of sort of hoped to bridge the two feuding philosophies. Barring that he figured, let the Sensates record the sensation of winging it! He gave his pipes the illusion of shooting flames, animated his lute and drums to provide backup music. Then he threw up the SIGN OF THE MINOTAUR!! And got to work. The spells and their execution are amateurish, but again he wasn't terribly concerned about it. After the riveting performance Cyprian kinda half-assed his way through the history of the Dustmen and the Society of Sensation. Then finally he gave a heartfelt appeal for cooperation.

But sadly his words were not heard as he was quickly being shepherded off the stage to make way for other, better acts.

 Fail post FTW

by Akh Uur Hoon » Tue Aug 15, 2023 10:00 pm

Akh Uur Hoon came to educate the Sensates about Death. This was her more 'vivid' experience she wanted to share. She could suspect that that would have some hard time resonating with the Sensates, but she didn't seek their favour. It's not like they had a good opinion about the Dustmen anyway.

She built a coffin. Then she lay down in it. Then she wiggled her legs before hopping out of it to commence a dance macabre. She'd borrow Cyprian for it if he was around.

Image

But what would be one without a proper visualisation of death? So she made herself look hideous, rotting, and generally very undead, not like the comely ghoulette she normally was.

[Casting Memento Mori]

Image

The dance was gruesome yet deeply contextual performance incorporating layers upon layers of knowledge about all things dead, dying, and having various restless conditions on the pathway to True Death. Someone with academic inclinations might have appreciated all that, especially that she was providing live references via her halo of luminous glyphs (in Illumian of course).

She stopped abruptly, addressing the Sensates.

"Think of your death!" She thought about adding a lecture on the futility of sensation-seeking and the paramount importance of prioritising True Death. But she was already being rushed to the side, followed by expressions of indifference, disgust, and perplexity, but neither strong enough to make a mark.

by Alynne Valaris » Tue Aug 15, 2023 3:34 pm

Alynne wasn't feeling it. On the surface, it would had been her time to shine, but she still can't connect on an empathic level to the peoples and beings that live in Sigil. Althoough she managed to convince and convey the why and how of what she wanted to share, her performance was absolutely terrible for her usual standards and her lack of training on other areas didn't help her.

In the end she didn't contribute much.

Hundreds of years ago, the legendary genius Leonardo payed for his daily and scientific expanses by selling novel distractions to rich hedonists.

Nowadays, nothing has changed. Except Leonardo's inventions were now old enough that it was homage and not plagiarism to remade them exactly as were.
