The satyr's words bring out a chuckle that's almost like bolts falling on a metal surface. The wide smile that remains after it does seem to fit this time.

"Admirable? We don't know... it's... just what it is, we think! If all there is around is suffering, what can one do? Look for some greater order or purpose, fifty-fifty? Although with true order and exact things a lie, that's more willy-nilly, zero?"

Another laugh.

"So one either watches the suffering, joins the suffering, or tries to make the experience enjoyable, at least! The latter usually needs helping, so why zero?"

Thad has some trouble reconciling the modron's expressions with what is being said. He wishes he'd done better with his task of learning to recognize [b]subtle[/b] sensations and sensory queues of people's emotions. Maybe he would get a better read on his new acquaintance.

"Jemorille, huh?" There's a noise similar to a small cog slowly moving and settling into place coming from somewhere within the monodrone. "They... won't be much more help, then, you mean? Aw..."

The smile that accompanies the sound doesn't fit at all.

"Making itself known... that could mean many different things, though, couldn't it?" A clinky laugh. "Well, if Mr Thaddeus has any other ideas on how to look for signs instead of just waiting for a big one, we could tag along, maybe. Although... the whole thing kinda makes us wonder if this isn't all just much ado about nothing, in the end" A whirring laugh, this time. "Would be a cosmic joke, so to say, wouldn't it?"

"As for us... well, we've been in the cage for some five years now. Brought here by the visitor after an... [i]incident[/i] in the home plane, see?"

Their voice is a bit flatter, although the smile is still there. It seems to even widen slightly, but somehow it seems like they're not too eager to discuss that.

"Wasn't very easy here at first... we were used to clockwork function and complete determinism... then to just find out that's all a lie?" A beepy laugh, again much too loud for the library. "Luckily enough the folks in the gatehouse are a very kind lot, and they helped us make non-sense of things, one? So now we try to help others where we can too!"

[i]That[/i] leads the Modron to another beepy laugh, one they can't quite hold back. "Oh, right, we never exchanged names back then with the perv, yeah? We're called Feature, mr Thaddeus. A pleasure! We're usually found helping at the Gatehouse or near it!"

Which isn't exactly saying they are one of the Bleakers, but it comes pretty close.

They extend a wiry hand while some whirring happens in the background. "Oh, we wouldn't want to [i]use[/i] the book, see. It just sounds like it should be fun to read! Or... well, maybe it's pretty, at least?"

A lower, but equally beepy chuckle.

"But it seems like getting a hold of it should be important to at least prevent horrible things from happening, yes? It seems like you have... ideas, at least, on how to go about with that?"

"Well, not on the scale like there's a lot goin' on, but on the scale of what's at stake. If the wrong berk gets ahold of the tome, they might be able to do some real damage.

I s'pose the [i]book[/i] could be fun. Somethin' with that much power, lot of things you could do with it. Can't say I'm not tempted myself... But there's a lot between me and the book way I see things right now."

Abruptly standing up, the satyr takes a bow, "Where are my manors. Although I don't mind being call Mister Goatlegs, my actual name is Thaddeus, Factotum of the Society of Sensation. And who might you be sir?"

The whole story makes the modron squint their single eye more and more.

"... on the scale of the Blood War? Agh... that sounds much too important..."

Somehow, it being important seems [i]frustrating[/i] to the Modron, if that's possible, although the way they demonstrate this is with a widening grin.

"We wonder, though. If it's something like the blood war, why so much ruckus here in the cage? Ah... the book, probably?"

Their eye seems to lighten up for a moment. "I suppose if this book is so important, it must be [i]fun[/i] at least, right?"

Thaddeus rolls his eyes a bit, "I wish. The man was so full of himself, I didn't want to bruise his ego by asking. Another time, when he doesn't have as much an upper hand on me, I'll have to dive into that story. I have a feelin' he won't be so shy about sharing, but I couldn't risk it today.

It's all barmy really. Startin' to feel like somethin' on the scale of the Blood War. Like we see some cony-catcher marking a deader, but it's really a proxy fightin' over a tome that could tear the planes apart."
