As the festivities within the Civic Festhall reach their peak, Unbeknownst to them, the intricate weave of the planar energies within Sigil reacts unpredictably, causing a chaotic magical mishap. The air shimmers with an arcane disturbance, and the ground beneath their feet rumbles ominously.

Fortunately, four spellcasters just happen to be out in the terrace & able to react before the worst happens.

Objective: The spellcaster must regain control of their magic and prevent the situation from escalating into disaster while avoiding harm to the partygoers and the Civic Festhall itself.

This event is open to 4 PCs who can cast spells (arcane or divine).

Primary Skills: Arcana, Concentration, Insight, Athletics

DCs and Effects:
  • DC 15 Arcana (or Concentration): The spellcaster feels the surge of magic slipping from their control. They must succeed on a Concentration check to prevent the spell from misfiring.
    Success: Proceed to Step 2.
Failure: The spell starts to misfire, and each caster takes 3d6 psychic damage. (Try Again)
  • DC 18 Arcana (or Athletics): The spellcaster manages to partially stabilize the magic but needs to ground their energy. They can choose to channel the energy into the ground or release it upward.
Success (Channel Downward): The ground trembles, but no serious harm is done. A minor, localized earthquake rumbles through the area, causing people to stumble. Some guests laugh it off as a part of the entertainment.
Success (Release Upward): The energy bursts into the sky, causing a dazzling display of lights. The partygoers marvel at the unexpected fireworks.
Failure: The spell starts to misfire, and each spellcaster takes 4d6 psychic damage. (Try Again)
  • DC 20 Insight: The spellcaster can sense the shifting energies and must decide how to navigate this magical dilemma.
Success: The spellcaster recognizes the risk of using their intended spell and chooses to alter its form, avoiding a disaster. No further rolls needed.
    Failure: Proceed to Step 4.
  • DC 25 Arcana (or Concentration): If the spellcaster failed the Insight check, they must focus on regaining control of the misfiring magic.
Success: The magic stabilizes, and the situation is brought under control. Guests are momentarily startled but unharmed.
Failure: The magical energies surge out of control, unleashing a localized Storm of Vengeance. Thunder, lightning, rain, and hail erupt around the Festhall, causing chaos and panic among the guests.
Outcome: If half of the spellcasters succeed in stabilizing the magic, the situation remains under control, and the party continues with a sense of wonder. If the spellcaster fails to control the magic, the Storm of Vengeance wreaks havoc, disrupting the party and potentially causing damage to the Civic Festhall.

If all of the spellcasters succeed, a reward of 500 gold will be given to each caster by the Sensates when Factol Montgomery is informed of what occurred.

Akh was just leaving the party when she took note of the disturbance. Something in her she couldn't entirely explain propelled her to taking a decisive action. She even called to others, louder than years in the Mortuary had got her used to. "Chaotic Anomaly!"

“Akh wait!” Cyprian had left the party after Akh, but he certainly hadnt anticipated this. “What in Midgard?”

Then he heard her yell. “Gods!”

The mindflayer's skin began to prickle.

Expending their senses outward the disruption of magic became quite apparent...and apparently very dangerous.

L'Orr-hui was a good spellcaster but would it be enough?

Illiam'iira is NOT letting any shit happen here. She came prepared.

Illi moves through the crowd to empower the three she trusts most to help manage this, and then starts to sing.

[1d8 bardic insp for each of you (and can double up for anyone who may need it so you get it twice) + enhance ability (intelligence) on everyone; using spellsong to further concentrate on the magic. -1 5th level spell slot, -1 3rd level spell slot. -2 charges on imbued studded leather to autopass con checks once it's her turn]

L'Orr-hui observed the unfolding situation with a curious interest: This would have to be investigated later. For now however they needed to take control of the situation. Thankfully three other face they recognized seemed to have gathered, alter to the potential crisis and ready to act.

The illithid weaved a spell into being before they could lose too much control. That would increase their chance of success quite significantly.

(Cast Skill Empowerment on self)

Bolstered with several layers of spell, the illithid masterfully handles the arcane tremor with spell siphon directing the energy upwards but they could only do so much alone!

Whatever happens, the question of this catastrophe's origin needed to be answered

Akh Uur Hoon was no great spellcaster, but she was a scholar, and hence she knew how to manage energies without great outputs of her own. She took the threads of the Weave into her hands and pulled ever so slightly to take the reins, the Spellsinger's song adding rhythm to her tugs...

LE5. Event. Arcana. DC15. Enhance Ability.: 2d20k1+11 25

The power was beyond her ability to suppress, so she turned it up, toward the skies. Directing it down could disturb some dead resting in unmarked graves beneath them.

LE5. Event. Arcana. DC18. Enhance Ability.: 2d20k1+11 28

She expected a simple beam of energy, perhaps a coloured display, but in her dead hands it quickly started turning into a necrotic ray...

I am a White Necromancer. I don't harm life. I don't abuse death. She reminded herself upon reflection.

LE5. Event. Insight. DC20.: 1d20+11 26

A spire of pure light made of tiny sigils rose toward the axis instead, through the darkened slit of the torus.

Illiam'iira doesn't hesitate. She's no wizard or great scholar, but the girl is the highest form of bard -- a spellsinger! Her voice rises as L'Orr and Akh begin to direct the Weave upwards, her own hands thrown high into the air as she begins to concentrate on the great magic before her. What would normally be beyond her abilities is made simple by the love of another: magic flows through her brigandine, white-gold light moving across its leylines to form the outline of her family's crest.

Part 1: DC 15 Con Check: Auto pass w imbued studded leather, -1 of 4 charges

When she first tries to meet the storm with her heart it backfires. All her anxiety and paranoia and anger explode outward, the magic storm acting as a violent conduit, all of them at once feeling everything that's hurting her. Illiam'iira is afraid. Illiam'iira is angry. Illiam'iira feels something very bad is about to happen to this city, and she's afraid no one will act to protect the vulnerable. Illiam'iira doesn't want anyone to get hurt, but doesn't know if she'll be enough. They're Big emotions made dangerous by magic beyond her control -- powerful enough to kill, were they lesser spellcasters. Her brigandine flares as she almost falls backwards.

Part 2: [D5 EE] Weave Event: Arcana DC 18: 2d20k1+2 5 FAIL
[D5 EE] Weave Event: Arcana DC 18 failure damage: 4d6 14 damage to all, uses 2nd charge of imbued studded leather to keep concentration, 2 of 4 left

Instead she grabs the brooch hanging from her neck and rings its bell, which sounds bright and clear above her singing, above the magic. Its cover disappears and Illiam'iira lifts it to stare at her other self in its mirror. You can't run away from what you are anymore. Her eyes begin to glow. You can do this. Her body turns void black as an echo of something divine slips into her voice. Live up to your name, Illiam'iira. By force of will she leads more of the magic upward, where it takes on an aurora-like quality, a cacophony of psychedelic colors dancing across the sky, thrumming in tune with her song.

Part 2 reroll: [D5 EE] Weave Event: Arcana DC 18 try 2: 2d20k1+2 21 SUCCESS
Part 3: [D5 EE] Weave Event: Insight DC 20 + Bardic Inspiration from Rian: 1d20+9+1d8 33 SUCCESS
+1 Bardic Inspiration from brooch

COMPLETED!

Enhance Ability: Intelligence is still up, Cyprian has three Bardic Inspiration from Illiam'iira he can use!

Illi's buff was helping, but Cyprian was so far out of his depth here. Worst of all he knew it. Still watching Akh and the others gave him hope. So he started singing. At first he had a handle on it.

'And It Ends With A Bang', Arcana DC 15: 1d20+7+1d8 13 <.<
'And It Ends With A Bang', Arcana DC 15: 1d20+7 22 ---> Pass
*Forgot to roll advantage

'Okay, he thought. I can do this.' He kept singing until Illiam's missfire hit him. He doubled over in pain as his own misfired.

'And It Ends With A Bang', Arcana DC 18: 2#1d20+7+1d8 16 15 Q.Q
'And It Ends With A Bang', Arcana DC 18: 2#1d20+7+1d8 31 16
'And It Ends With A Bang', Damage: 4d6 7 An additional 7 points of damage

He was hurting but kept going. 'I can do this, just sing!' As he thought this he felt like he had it. 'It's working! It's working! Just a little more!'

'And It Ends With A Bang', Insight DC 20: 1d20+6+1d8 14 <.< Orokos!!!
'And It Ends With A Bang', Insight DC 20: 1d20+6+1d8 19 REROLL STILL FAILED! OROKOS!!!!! Throws orokos away
'And It Ends With A Bang', Arcana DC 25: 2#1d20+7+1d8 14 16 !!!!!!!!!!! Fail

But it wasn't working, and he certainly didn't have enough juice to keep it going on sheer power alone. "No... no!" The spell began to backfire, and hope proved to be the greatest evil in Pandora's box.

______________
Failed, Party takes 7 points of damage

:'( No tendies

With combined effort, the spellcasters manage to regain control of the volatile magic, their experienced hands guiding the weaving threads of power back into alignment. The rumbling beneath their feet subsides, and the air clears as the shimmering disturbances fade away. The magic, once chaotic and unpredictable, is now a controlled display of brilliance.

As the last traces of the magical energies dissipate, the crowd erupts into applause and cheers, mistaking the unexpected event for a planned spectacle. The guests marvel at the magical lights that dance across the night sky, illuminating the festivities like stars.

You all hear the oos and aahs from inside the situation, and with it, no doubt, a utter look of confusion from those inside for the sudden rumble underneath their feet and the sparkling display of arcane flourishment outside. Though, any moment of confusion is quickly dispelled within moments as they equally take the credit. The damage to the area itself was somewhat small, and would probably take a day or two to repair, but considering what could have been, not to mention the potential lives lost, it was quite clear that it could have been far worse.
